Dead tree press have some odd views on online news.

Unsure how chopping google news off can be a positive. Snippets and headlines are traffic generators and not the 'meat' itself.

You say that but they are rich and powerful, have great branding, and will likely outlive all members here despite the fact that we are more modern.

I'm guessing it's a negotiating tactic - ultimately Google is going to be forced to subsidise these guys somehow.

The same thing may happen in France:

    and possibly Germany too:

    Some do, some dont.

The Guardian is now a bigger 'brand' online than off, as is the Daily Mail. Inside 5 years it wouldnt surprise me to see both go entirely online - and global.

News consumption has and is changing, do people on here go to 'brands' for news or do they actively interact/search for topics of interest?

Filters at the moment seem to be the best bet eg. Reddit.com , but less cats

There's also the consideration that there are a couple of very strong independent suppliers of news in Portuguese ... strong enough to compete successfully with Google (they have to be weak in some areas).

Word is the Guardian maybe bankrupt within a year, if that happens the only bit left will be the online section. The print part will certainly go.

Had a good chat earlier with a media type, 4-5 years timeframes inside industry to change.

Journalists being fired right left & centre and being replaced with 'content generators' on 17k pa.

Thats a big UK newspaper group.

The Guardian doesn't make money anyway, and it hasn't for years. The money to prop it up comes from Auto Trader ...
