Nominet today unleashed swingeing proposals that would appear to sound the death knell for dropcatching, dropcatchers and associated businesses that are reliant upon the secondary market.

It looks like the larger public registrars might be the largest beneficiaries of this if they are awarded auspices to manage resulting public auctions.

The proposals/recommendations do raise a plethora of operational issues. We can only wait to see what transpires.

If you have any comments on these proposals, please post them here and write to Nominet at this address: policy@nominet.org.uk - deadline is 20th February 2012.

Coming to a .uk near you, horror stories like these.. true or not who knows but they are the kind of thing we have been able to avoid by not incouraging registrars to not renew customers names.

Welcome to the wild west created by Nominet... .uk space is now looking after 2-3 big registrars not the public nor the members.

I see the latest news on this from Nom Towers is that drop catching and drop list issues have been deferred to another future quango.

Yes and no. If they let registrars help themselves at will to expiring domains under their control, drop catching will be killed via the back door.

From that document I'm glad they listened and took on board most parts of what the majority had concerns about and broadly welcome their findings.

What I would take issues with and being a bit pedantic about is this statement

"From the feedback received, it was clear that many stakeholders misconstrued a domain name as
property of the registrant, rather than a contractual right to use the domain name as provided for in
Nominet’s registrant terms and conditions. This opinion had a direct effect on the views on whether
registrars had a right to take control of the domain name."

Whilst technically correct, you could say that Nominet have a confused message when launch a "keepyour.co.uk". Suppose a campaign called "keepour.co.uk" might have been a bit confusing. I don't think that stakeholders do misconstrue it and well aware of the state of play. We all deal with our domains as if we own them, we all treat others domains as if they own them. I don't know why they needed to raise that issue.

Apart from that small gripe I think it is a balanced and well thought out release, good to see the groups working in a way that reflects the feelings of stakeholders who replied.
