I have a vbulletin forum which I constantly neglect due to the amount of forum spam.

When I speak to the guy managing the site, he comes up with excuses and makes it sound as though stopping spam is very difficult.

As a few of you here have forums and have been through the spam issue, I'll be very grateful if anyone here could tell me in simple terms what is required to prevent spam on a vbulletin forum.

Is it simply change to the settings, do i need a particular version, do I need to pay for an upgrade ? I want to be able to tell the guy what to do without having to listen to his excuses.

Many thanks in advance.

A human verification question did ours mate, never had any problems and only know of two spammers in 4 years. Our question was "what colour is the beret of the Royal Marines?"

That seems to have kept them out....

I had a really bad problem with spam on a forum that couldn't be controlled by human verification or captcha and installed this mod:

http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=248042

It works like a charm. It basically runs the email address and ip address of anyone trying to join through the database at:

http://stopforumspam.com/

and blocks anyone that matches. There are several options to customise things as well.

As above, ask a question in registration.

It stops 99% of spam registrations on stuff I run.

Add custom field then regex a match. eg. What colour does man u play in = red etc
