Interesting blog post:

http://domainnamewire.com/2012/08/27/your-domain-names-are-worth-less-than-you-think/

It references Elliot's blog post asking people to post their best domain names for sale:

http://www.elliotsblog.com/what-domain-names-are-you-selling-7047

It's worth the time reading through all the comments to see the crap that people are registering and trying to sell.

The blog post also mentions the "Endowment Effect":
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endowment_effect
which is something I hadn't heard of before and found to be an interesting concept.

Trouble is though if you were willing to sell a domain for the same price you were willing to buy it for, you wouldn't be selling it in the first place otherwise you'd be the person to buy it from yourself. It's kind of a circular argument when looking at it logically.

Do people over value their names, yes I do believe they do. I usually go with something I learned a little while ago, "Most of the time you don't know you have a bad business idea until you get a better one".

I find it to be similar with domains also.

Some real stinkers, yes. But that's the same as you see on the Appraisals forum on Acorn, and in any "Wanted"-type thread. From the heaps of evidence, most people don't have the faintest clue what makes a decent domain name, and seem (by their subsequent actions) unwilling to learn.
